The one-night only event will benefit the Prospect Playhouse, home of the Cayman Drama Society. CDS members are currently raising funds to expand the theatre (Caymanian Compass, 1 March).
The evening's star may need some introduction in Cayman, but a casual check of the Internet shows the name Bremner Duthie on over a dozen sites. [Unfortunately, none of the accompanying pictures download appropriately for newspaper reproduction.] Mr. Duthie is a baritone whose show of Weill music Whiskey Bars...Kabarett and Broadway has received international acclaim. He has sung everything from Figaro and Frankenstein to Handel's Messiah and contemporary works by both Canadian and American composers.
Born in New York to British parents, he grew up in Scotland, studied music at McGill University in Canada and now lives in France. Along the way, he met writer Lisa Pasold and the Cayman connection was established. Lisa is the daughter of longtime Cayman residents Peter and Anne Pasold. Bremner is now their son-in-law and the couple is visiting the Island this month.
The singer agreed to do the show and Katie Moore agreed to accompany him. Katie has just finished a long run as pianist for West Side Story and is an anchor for many local productions. She also sings in the Cayman National Choir.
According to a summary provided by proud father-in-law Peter, Whiskey Bars... is set in the bare dressing room of a rundown nightclub. Bremner Duthie plays a performer preparing to sing a cabaret show of Kurt Weill songs.
He enters in a towel and dresses between songs. However, on this night, he is being harassed by a critic who has invaded his dressing room. By the end of the evening the singer has been forced to examine not only his music but also his reasons for continuing his career.
As is customary with CDS shows, curtain is 7.30 pm. Admission of $15 includes snacks before and after.
