But Erica is also a heroine to the Cayman Drama Society, which is sponsoring the production. When actress/singer Joanne Diaz Berry had to leave the Island suddenly because of her mother's illness, the cast and crew of over 30 feared the show would have to close.
Erica, however, stepped in from her backstage role and took on the challenge of mastering lines, melodies and dances in just two days. Her first performance won a standing ovation.
"A lot of people know Joanne's talent and were disappointed when they found out she wouldn't be performing," director Colin Wilson acknowledged.
"Erica had never performed with CDS before, so, of course, people couldn't know what to expect." What he himself expected and what turned out to be true was Erica's feel for the role and the smoothness with which she and other cast members were able to work together. "We're just sorry it took this kind of emergency to discover Erica's abilities," Colin said.
The show, which features all the traditional ingredients of English pantomime, continues for three more performances: tonight (Friday) and tomorrow at 7:30 pm, plus a matinee tomorrow at 3:00 pm.
Tickets are $12.50 for adults and $6 for children under 14. They may be obtained from Phillips Electrical on Shedden Road (949-5585) or at the theatre before performances.
