The roof appeal was started at the end of December in the form of letters to CDS members. To date 19 donations have been received totalling a little more than $4,000. To complete repairs, however, $20,000 is needed.
Construction of the Playhouse began late 1981, when the Society used funds it had raised to build the steel frame and roof of the structure. Construction was halted for nine years, until donations. tions and loans funded the remainder of the theatre.
Since its October 1990 opening the company has produced numerous plays and "gone from strength to strength", according to a letter from CDS chairman Colin Wilson which was sent to members in December.
In the past, funds from productions have poured back into the Society to assist with future shows, a drama trust fund to build training in the arts and the upkeep of the Prospect Playhouse.
However, this appeal is being made due to a "crisis situation”, according to the letter. The roof, which is now almost 16 years old, has been leaking badly, ruining costumes and props. Repairs need to be made quickly. The closing date for the letter appeal is 3 March, at which time fundraising efforts will be reconsidered, said Penny Phillips, secretary for CDS.
Anyone wishing to donate to the roof fund can deposit money into the Bank of Butterfield, account number 02201-03200, account name Cayman Drama Society Savings Account.
