The students are here through a Cayman Drama Society programme. By making the project totally a student venture, it is to give students the experience of touring a show. Mr. Paul de Freitas and his wife Fayanne came up with the idea after visiting their daughter Samantha de Freitas, who is a student of USF. The de Freitas' say it was after many negotiations, many headaches, and many late nights that the crew were ready to come and show Cayman what they can do.
The show is "Crimes of the Heart," by Beth Henley. It depicts the lives of three Southern American sisters who are reunited after one of them shoots her husband. The cast and crew worked solidly for about a month and a half in Tampa, amidst classes and final exams, before coming to Cayman with a polished production.
Samantha de Freitas, the USA producer says she is "very proud of what my fellow students have accomplished. I feel fully confident that everyone in Cayman will get a kick out of this show. The director, Stuart Fail, has formed a very funny play, which also has some touching moments. Everyone will laugh and cry." While in Cayman, the students are also learning a little about the West Indian culture and theatre from Mr. Henry. Muttoo, Administrator of the Harquail Theatre, and Mr. Dave Martins, Chairman of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation.
Some of the Cayman Islands High School students are also benefiting from the programme, as students from the USF group, and their faculty advisor Dr. Patrick Finelli, have been performing workshops on university life and improvising in acting. The USF students are staying with different members of the Cayman Drama Society.
All proceeds from the production will go into the Cayman Drama Society Scholarship Fund reserved for Caymanian students with a love for theatre. "Crimes of the Heart" is performing at the Prospect Playhouse tonight and tomorrow night at 7:30pm.
