By Samantha de Freitas; photograph by Ward Scott For years youngsters and adults alike have enjoyed the 1964 movie classic "My Fair Lady". It is a rags-to-riches story with a very English tone, and is filled with catchy songs and lively dances by colourfully-dressed ladies and gentlemen.

The film was adapted from a stage musical from the original play, "Pygmalion", by the famous Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, the best comic dramatist of the late eighteenth century. In the Warner Bros film, Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Dolittle and Rex Harrison as the pompous anti-hero Professor Higgins created an unforgettable magic on the screen. Now this immensely popular musical is being brought to the island by the Cayman Drama Society.

The play is a humane comedy about love and class. It tells the story of a common Cockney flower girl who dreams of becoming a lady. She meets a pompous phonics teacher called Professor Higgins and he tells her that he can help her to become a lady by teaching her how to speak properly. Consequently Higgins makes a bet with a friend of his, Colonel Pickering, that he can pass her off as a lady in the highest society and sets out to transform Eliza.

However, Eliza, who succeeds in her lessons, becomes a shine in the eye of an eligible young bachelor, and the success of Professor Higgins' experiment creates other repercussions. The CDS production follows the exact storyline as the Warner Bros film did, including all the wonderful songs and dance routines.

The cast is made up of many well-known favourites from past CDS productions. Wendy (Daikin) Moore plays the ingenuous Eliza Dolittle, with Peter Riley as her father Alfred. Professor Higgins, who attempts to teach Eliza how to speak like a duchess, is played by Alan Hall, with John Gaylor as his counterpart Colonel Pickering.

Mrs. Pierce, Professor Higgins' housekeeper, is performed by Freda Bettany.

"My Fair Lady" is being directed by Jackie Balls, who is well-known for her choreography of ballet pieces, and can be seen at the Prospect Playhouse in Red Bay.

The opening night is Thursday, 6 June, and there is a special gala performance on Friday, 7 June. Other performance dates are 8, 13-15, 20-22, 27-29 June.
