First women members from local Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman have accepted women into their organisation, for the first time. This was made possible by an almost unanimous decision taken during last year's Kiwanis International Conference in Washington D.C. With this in mind, the Kiwaniannes Club of Grand Cayman voted, again almost unanimously, to disband and join Kiwanis.

(Originally, the Kiwaniannes were all women, and the Kiwanis were all men.) Mrs. Fayanne de Freitas, President of Kiwaniannes at the time, said the reason for the move was: "Our club was doing the same things as Kiwanis so it made sense to join forces." She explained that the women were always involved in the projects Kiwanis organised, and vice versa. Both clubs were doing the same activities, working as hard as each other, but being organised separately. "The merge is a lot more economical," she said.

Fayanne de Freitas, Electra Drepaul, Sarah Stoy, and Ingrid Shaver were the first four women to become members of Kiwanis. The total is now about ten.

"The Kiwanis Club is now open to all members in the community regardless of sex," said Mr. Paul de Freitas, President of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman. Anyone wishing further information should call him at 98382.
