Starting Saturday 19 May, the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman will be hosting a weekly discotheque for teenagers under the auspices of their Youth Activity Centre programme. All events will take place at the newly refurbished Small Theatre at the Harquail Centre. Each Saturday evening Grafitti, a discotheque, will take place between 7.30pm and 11.30pm to the accompaniment of both live and recorded disco music. Events will be held on other evenings depending on the needs and aspirations of the teenagers. The Youth Activity Centre will be managed by a committee comprising both Kiwanis and teenagers.

Discussing the project, Mr. Paul de Freitas, President of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman, indicated that the major emphasis of all Kiwanis Clubs is to enhance the environment within which children must mature.

"While the Cayman Islands are a wonderful place for children to grow up, the reality of the matter is that there are often too many freedoms due to lack of parental guidance. These freedoms can lead to drug and alcohol consumption, juvenile delinquency and all the other evils seen in societies which have no time to give to kids. The Youth Activity Centre is an attempt to provide a wholesome evening environment for young adults.

"Grafitti is the first step - a nightclub atmosphere created specially for disco-style entertainment. We envisage a small management committee comprising Kiwanis and young adults which will drive the concept further and expand the number of evenings that the centre will operate. We'd like to see it develop as a place to which teenagers can relate, and if they carry the concept further themselves, we believe that goal will be achieved."

"To kick the whole thing off, we are announcing a logo contest. What we would like is for young adults between the ages of 13 and 19 to design a logo for 'Grafitti'. The winning logo will be produced in neon and will be placed at the entrance to the centre. The chosen design will win a CI$200 donation to the PTA of the school attended by the designer and an award of CI$25 to the designer.

"We encourage the art departments at the various schools to get involved in this project." Designs may be handed in at the offices of Cayman Computing Limited, Abacus House, Walkers (opposite Vigoro Nursery) marked with the name, age, school and telephone number of the entrant. Entries must be submitted by Friday 20 April.
