Opening Friday, 21 July. are two new plays which will run every Friday and saturday for three weekends at the group's new facility above the Lord Nelson Pub on West Bay road. Now in the final stages of rehearsal are an Ionesco classic, "The Lesson," and "See If I Care" by Cherry Vooght.
"The Lesson" tells the story of an eccentric professor attempting to prepare a young girl for her final examinations. What happens when she doesn't appear to learn is rather different from the usual teacher/pupil relationship.
The professor is portrayed by Cliff Fix, who was last seen on the Harquail stage, as Avram in "Fiddler on the Roof". Yvonne Warwick, a newcomer to the CDS, plays his pupil. Veteran performer Penny Phillips is cast as the professor's very helpful maid. The trio is directed by Bill Bazelman.
The second play on the bill, "See if I Care," features two elderly ladies, played by Hilda Bodden and Fayanne DeFreitas. They spend their afternoons reminiscing on a park bench as various people walk by, including one who is definitely not welcome and provides an unexpected twist to the story.
Supporting roles are played by Yvonne Warwick, Ann Duncan and Lisa Culbert. Directing this all-female cast is Valerie Cottier.
Organisers stress that no tickets will be sold at the door. Instead, they may be obtained from Lionel Fidler at Colombian Emeralds or by calling 95395. The price per person is $25, which includes the two plays and dinner, catered by the Lord Nelson.
