At another recent performance a group from the Pines Retirement Home saw the pantomine at the invitation of the Drama Society.
On that special children's night the capacity audience were instructed by the panto's director, Colin Wilson, who the bad guys and the good guys were. Then the children participated wholeheartedly, loudly booing the Wicked Witch, played by Penny Philips, and cheering the Fairy Princess, in the form of Gwen Diaz.
As it turned out Dum-Dum found new followers. The High School students: loudly supported Sydney Coleman in his role of Dum-Dum.
The cast rated the children the best audience yet. in terms of volume, with their hissing, cheering and shouting. As the second act reached its climax when Sleeping Beauty (Jennifer Ali-Hussein) married her Prince (Valerie Cottier) and the Wicked Witch was destroyed in flames and smoke, the noise reached a crescendo. As the children left happy, and in some-cases dew y-eyed, one young man from Bonaventure was heard to say that as soon as he was old enough, he too wanted to tread the boards in the theatre.
That one comment made the whole event even more worthwhile.
