On Monday, the Cayman Drama Society took the initial step towards the construction of Cayman's first theatre when his Excellency the Governor, Mr. Thomas Russell, attended a small ceremony at the Cayman Racquet Club and felled the first tree on the proposed site.

The land on which the theatre will be built has been generously leased to the Society at a nominal rent by the owners of the Racquet Club who have also granted the Society a most reasonable option to purchase it over the next ten years.

The Society hopes that phase one, involving little more than a roof four walls and essential plumbing, will be completed next year and thereby provide Cayman Drama Society with a permanent home for its equipment and costumes.

With the adjoining bar and restaurant facilities at the Racquet Club, it is hoped that major productions will be performed in the not too distant future, offering patrons an enjoyable evening's dining, drinking and theatre.

The Society also hopes that the theatre will be used by other arts and cultural groups in the island and already is working in close cooperation with the Cayman Singers and the visual Arts Society.

Much of the early preparatory work has been done by members of the Society; Malcolm Stephenson has completed comprehensive architectural plans, Margaret Barwick has designed the landscaping and Barry Smith has acted for the society in the complicated legal procedures involving the drawing up of the lease. All three have given their services freely in the hope that this dream will become a reality.

Construction begins in early January and the Society's fundraiser will commence their campaign at that time.
