Too many acts, containing a mixture of good and indifferent material, presented by some new and some familiar faces, resulted in the variety show being rushed into a finale, barely by the witching hour.
Production was handled by the ever reliable duo of Peter and Penny Phillips, and considering the volume of the show, the last minute preparation and a tempermental P.A. system, handled smoothly and efficiently. This production was no easy task considering the club nights have progressed from a casual get together to a variety show in dinner theatre, and it is hoped that next time some serious direction be introduced.
Even if only to coordinate, arrange timing and sift out poor or repetitive material which in some cases. borders on boring and time consuming in restricted performance hours.
The finale, a return to the stage by Leroy and his partner Stanley Panton after an eight year lay off was unfortunately hurried, with the audience looking at their watches for midnight and not at the talented performance on stage which was so different from any other sketch previously performed.
Acts varied from comedy to straight acting, mixed in with singing and dancing. the most memorable performances being presented by John Martin, Steve Williams and Peter Smith three men of tremendous talent.
The show was held together by the always smooth touch of anchor man Arek Joseph. whose routine and wit unfortunately suffered from some embarrassing interruptions.
Cayman should be proud that such a vast variable abundance of talent exits on the stage although it was a pity to see some such talent having energies channelled in the wrong direction or in old rehashed routines.
As a club night and get together it was most enjoyable, some of the most amusing acts being performed at the end of the buffet line, and undoubtedly the next one should be on a similar dinner, drinks, basis, but perhaps with more thought as the Cayman Drama Society can do so well.
