Members of the Cayman Drama Society on Wednesday authorised its executive committee to proceed with all arrangements for the construction of a small theatre next to the Cayman Racquet Club. The decision, by a show of hands of financial members of the Society, came at an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members called at the Town Hall in George Town. It entails the leasing of a plot of land from CAYRAC Ltd for a period of 10 years. The committee also sought members' authorisation "to enter into any financing arrangements up to an

Contd. on page 2 amount of CI$8,000 to enable the completion of the small theatre."

Conducted by CDS chairman Mike Marshall, the meeting was the culmination of many weeks of discussion and often dissention regarding the construction of a theatre. Some members of the CDS claimed that such an action would conflict with the Government's plans for the eventual construction of a national theatre.

The committee argued, however, that the small theatre would not conflict with any Government plans, and that, in any case, the Society was in urgent need of a home since the Town Hall was becoming less and less available as a growing number of local groups were competing for its use.

The proposed small theatre, according to plans prepared by architect Malcolm Stephenson, would seat approximately 138 patrons. The cost of construction, with Society members supplying some labour, would be CI$24,000. The property is to be leased at CI$1.00 per year, with food and beverage concessions going to the Racquet Club exclusively for the period of the lease.

Before the final vote was taken, Society members posed questions and com-

composed. mented for and against the proposal. At the outset of the meeting, the chairman presented prepared remarks concerning the CDS storage, rehearsal and staging difficulties leading up to the decision to find a home of its own. (See chairman's remarks on page 5).
